Summer Training 2017

With the days lengthening and the weather warming up, now is a great time to build on the fitness painfully built up over the winter and convert stamina to speed. Athletes will adjust their training to peak for specific races throughout the summer period, with individuals targeting international events (such as the Sella Descent, Dorgodne Integrale or Liffey Descent), national success or aiming for divisional promotion. The Cambridge racing group as a whole is aiming to qualify for the Hasler Marathon finals, a national event for which clubs qualify on a regional basis.

NOTE: The following is intended as a guide only. Detailed weekly plans are updated over email. Please contact the Competition Secretary or Webmaster to arrange access to the CCC-Racing mailing list.

Monday
Interval session
Early group (divs 1-7) meet 5:45/6pm start
Late group (divs 1-7) meet 6.30/6.45pm start
Timed efforts with limited rest either on the lower river (below Jesus Lock) or to Grantchester. The slower paddlers are usually given a head-start, with the group splitting based on speed as required to keep everyone together. Great practice for handling bumpy water and wash-hanging. Bring a GPS or timing watch if you have one!

Adult beginners
Meet at 6.30pm
Coached session for paddlers who are new to the sport or a refresher for those who's skills have lapsed. Typically sessions focus on efficient paddling technique and provide an opportunity to get used to the club racing boats. Please get in touch via email if you're planning on coming to this session to ensure sufficient coaches are available.

Wednesday
Speed work
Early group meet 5.45/6pm start
Late group meeting 6.30/6.45 start
Focus on starting and sprinting over short (up to 1000m) distances with longer recovery. Typically run outside the club or on the way up to Grantchester. Efforts run as massed starts or with gaps to give people clear water.

Thursday
Railway Bridge Time Trial
Meet at 6:00/6:30pm start
This is a flat out time trial downstream to the railway bridge and back (~10.5km with 4 portages). Most people finish in 50-70 minutes. Boats are set off at 1 minute intervals with the slowest first - try to catch the boat in front without being caught yourself! Times are recorded week by week to show your progression. Most importantly, we retire to the Red Bull (Newnham) for pizza and a drink afterwards!

Saturday
Parkrun, Wimpole
Run starts 9:00am http://www.parkrun.org.uk/wimpoleestate/
A number of paddlers have taken to doing this free, friendly and timed 5km cross-country run through the picturesque Wimpole Estate. Lifts from the club can often be obtained, or the keen ones cycle there. Coffee and cake at the National Trust cafe afterwards is strongly encouraged!

Junior racing group
10:30am
By popular demand, this summer we'll be running a coached junior racing group on Saturdays in addition to Kids Club on Sunday. A great opportunity to get into the sport of kayak racing or hone that competitive edge. Please get in touch via email if you're planning on coming to this session to ensure sufficient coaches are available.

Senior racing group
10:30am
Long pyramid sessions, races-to-places or steady tempo paddles to Grantchester (~6km), Baits Bite lock (~16km) or Bottisham lock (~26km) depending on division and motivation level!
